German Grammar 102 – Articles

Want to learn German, for free? Check out our online beginners’ German course. German Grammar 102 – Articles.

Nouns in German appear most of the time with an article, just like in English.

The definite articles der (masculine), die (feminine), das (neuter), die (plural, all genders) correspond with “the“ in English.

The indefinite articles ein (masculine), eine (feminine), ein (neuter) correspond with ‘a/an’.

With the indefinite article “ein“ it’s not clear whether the noun is masculine or neuter, for example “ein Taschenrechner“ (calculator) or “ein Handy“ (mobile phone).

So you are advised to always learn the noun with its definite article, like this:

“der Taschenrechner“ – maculine
“das Handy“ – neuter

Examples:

der Apfel / the apple
ein Apfel / an apple

die Löffel / the spoons
Löffel / spoons

die Lampe / the lamp
eine Lampe / a lamp

das Buch / the book
ein Buch / a book

Here a few examples of articles in sentences:

Der Apfel ist grün.
The apple is green.

Die Löffel sind hier.
The spoons are here.

Die Lampe ist schön.
The lamp is beautiful.

Das ist ein Buch.
That is a book.

Das sind Löffel.
These are spoons.
